Make it LAST on the Olympic Peninsula

Our purpose is to…

Unite Clallam County through coordinating and supporting Local Actions for a Sustainable Tomorrow.

Our objective is to bring all groups on the Olympic Peninsula that are concerned with our sustainability, our lifestyles and the peninsula's well-being toward the common goal of preparing for the significant changes that will take place because of peak oil and climate change.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Communication: Raise public awareness of the environmental, economic and social challenges facing Clallam County; build a compelling case for action to meet these challenges.

Education: Provide detailed information and facilitate the development of skills, knowledge and resources that will be needed within a sustainable local community.

Community Development: Strengthen ties between community and governmental groups in order to create or enhance local infrastructure to address the challenges we face.

Demonstration: Take individual and collective action, in whatever ways we each can, to serve as an example of sustainable local community citizenship.

FOCUS AREAS

Energy
Transportation
Farmland preservation
Food
Water
Emergency preparedness
Recycling and waste management
Communication
Healthcare

We have developed a matrix of Guiding Principles vs. Focus Areas to come up with possible detailed objectives, tasks and deliverables within each cell of the matrix. This is our LAST Action Planner at http://relocalize.net/last_action_planner .

Background:

World oil production is plateauing because oil discoveries have been declining, significantly, since the 1960s. All indicators show we are at or very near the world peak oil production while oil demand is significantly increasing. Oil prices may rise so significantly that the economy of the world is shut down, forcing us to return to community-based systems, i.e. permaculture.

Here is an overview video by Dr Colin Campbell explaining the Peak Oil issue.

The last Wednesday night of each month, we will be having planning meetings at the Sequim Library at 7PM and/or having a DVD showing of a related Peak Oil/Climate Change topic and/or a speaker on the related issues. We will communicate the rest of the time through our Blogs at http://relocalize.net/node/7307/blogs . If you are interested in attending, please email me at olylast@yahoo.com.

You are invited to join our group. I think it is our best hope for a soft landing & new, better lifestyle.
Take care
Sid
